REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A member of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR) Bambang Soesatyo has commended the police for its swift performance in handling the Jakarta bombings.

"We laud the performance of the police for handling the attacks swiftly," Soesatyo noted here on Monday during a joint meeting with members of DPR's Commission III and National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti.

He supported the revision of Law No. 9 of 2013 on the prevention and eradication of terrorism. The law has yet to set a broader role of the police in eradicating terrorism.

"The police have faced difficulties in tackling certain groups who invite and incite people with certain religious teachings through various mediums," he affirmed.

Soesatyo remarked that law enforcement had failed to implement measures against Indonesian citizens who committed acts of terrorism overseas.

In addition, National Awakening Party (PKB) politician Jazilul Fawaid supported the revision of the Terrorism Act.

"The revision should provide a broader authority to the police. As a result, the state is not defeated by terrorism. We are concerned over the collaboration between terrorism and drugs," a member of Commission III emphasized.

Meanwhile, a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) faction Herman Heri urged the government to increase and improve the role of police officers assigned to villages as advisors on security and public order (Babinkamtibmas) to prevent terrorism.

The DPR had earlier expressed its readiness to revise Law No. 9 of 2013 on the prevention and eradication of terrorism in the fourth session of the 2015-2016 period.

"The DPR is ready to revise the terrorism law in a bid to safeguard the people," House Speaker Ade Komaruddin stated here on Friday.

Since the onset, the House has conveyed its decision to President Joko Widodo during a consultation meeting of state institutions on Tuesday (Jan. 19) concerning the terrorism act, he noted.

Komaruddin remarked that the DPR had expressed readiness to revise the law if the president issued a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu).

The revision was expected to offer security to the community by improving the law.

The terrorism act was listed in the 2016 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).
