BNPT: Terrorist bases have spread to some regions of Indonesia

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Terrorist bases have spread to some regions of Indonesia, Head of National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Saud Usman Nasution said.

"The bases vary in some regions. There are some in Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, and East Java, apart from Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and even in Maluku," Saud said at the Coordinating Ministry of Politic, Law and Security Affairs building, here Friday night.

The seeds of terrorism have grown in the conflicted region in the eastern part of Indonesia, Saud also said.

Earlier, the anti-terror detachment Densus 88 had arrested some suspected terrorists in certain parts of Indonesia, Friday (January 15), a day after the bomb attack on MH. Thamrin road.

The police arrested some suspected terrorists in Bekasi in West Java, Tegal in Central Java, Cirebon in West Java, and Depok in West Java, in addition to Balikpapan in East Kalimantan.

The authority confiscated some items attributed to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) during the arrest in Cirebon.

The anti-terrorist squad of the police has arrested five people in connection with Thursday's terror attacks from the villages of Langgen and Talang, in the district of Tegal, Central Java, Friday.

Two of them were believed to be terror suspects while the other three were still being questioned, Central Java police command Chief Inspector General Nur Ali said, confirming the development.

Meanwhile, officers also conducted a crime scene investigation at the house of the suspected terrorist, who attacked Jakarta's main boulevard, in Meruya, North Jakarta.

The house was used to assemble the bombs which were used in the terror act Thursday, spokesperson of the Jakarta Metro Police said.

The local authority has tightened security measures at some airports and in the border areas.

On Thursday morning (January 14), six bombs exploded at MH. Thamrin Boulevard in front of a Starbucks coffee shop and a police traffic booth.

As many as 24 people were injured and seven died in the attack.

Among the seven casualties, five were the attackers themselves, while two were civilians.

Among the dead were two suicide bomb attackers while three other terrorists were killed in the shootout with the police.

Of the two civilians who died, one was an Indonesian and the other a Canadian.
