Govt issues decree of Peat Restoration Agency

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government issued Presidential Decree related to the establishment of Peat Restoration Agency as an attempt to conduct fire prevention in peatland. Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK) Siti Nurbaya said, Peat Restoration Agency was stated in Presidential Decree No.1 of 2016 issued on 6th January 2016.

"It duties was to organize landscape ecology, namely peatland. It has survived and should not be burned and caused a fire," she said, Wednesday ( 13/1).

According to Siti, the agency would conduct large-scale restoration, in order to manage peatland to be prevented from fire. She revealed, peatlands that would be restored were about 2-3 million hectares.

In addition to restoration, she added, Land Use Management would also concern to carbon emissions. Ministries involved in the restoration among others Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Agrarian and Spatial Planning, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, and Ministry of National Development Planning.
