REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded the public to be alert for landslides in the beginning of La Nina which was expected to occur in September 2016.
"We still continue to monitor La Nina. El Nino is expected to weaken after March, then it will be followed by La Nina. The impact will be felt at the end of 2016," said Head of Meteorology Publications of BMKG, Mulyono R Prabowo, in Jakarta, Wednesday (13/1).
Soils which became very dry during El Nino, at the beginning of La Nina typically would be vulnerable and cause fragments that could trigger landslides. BMKG has informed this condition to related parties and cooperated with Center for Volcanology Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) in mapping location of landslides.
While, La Nina could cause floods in urban scale as in Jakarta. It was strongly influenced by intensity of rainfall in the area. Soil absorption in urban areas such as Jakarta, also greatly affected. Besides that, there are also tides that make water from upstream Jakarta can not flow into the sea.
In general, Indonesia has two seasons, but at the same time the phenomenon of El Nino and La Nina give different effects on the two seasons. Rainfall decreases when El Nino occurs even though in rainy season.
