Jokowi sees Saudi-Iran conflict not only about faith

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Ma'ruf Amin said, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) realized that conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran was quite complicated. It was because, the conflict not only about faith, but also about economy which was closely related to oil.

"The conflict became more complicated because there were the United States and Russia behind it," said Ma'Ruf when meeting the President at the Presidential Palace, Tuesday (5/1).

Ma'ruf added, Indonesia has power to reconcile the two countries. Moreover, Indonesia is the largest Muslim nation in the world that is well respected.

MUI stated that conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran must be ended, so as not to cause a wider war. As is known, both parties also have their respective allies, Iran with Iraq, Lebanon and Syria, while Saudi Arabia with the Gulf countries.

"He (President) stated, Indonesia is making diplomatic efforts," he said.
