REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) should be more powerful to combat corruption in the country, former Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) stated.

"I fully support the agency, and the commission may even become stronger," SBY remarked after the inauguration of the new building of the KPK here on Tuesday.

SBY attended the event, which was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo.

The ceremony was also attended by former president B.J. Habibie and former vice president Hamzah Haz.

The presence of these figures signified their support to the agency's measures to eradicate and prevent corruption in Indonesia.

"We have great expectations from the commission," he affirmed.

The Indonesian people have urged the state to ensure clean and good governance.

"We want a clean system of governance, and the agency is the backbone of it. I hope the KPK would conduct its duties in a proper, professional, and integrated manner," he affirmed.

Earlier, President Widodo has forecast that the KPK would face heavier challenges in future as corruption cases would increase in number and complexity.

"But, the KPK will also have to meet high public expectations with regard to its performance," he remarked while inaugurating the new KPK building to coincide with the 12th anniversary of the anti-graft body, here, Tuesday.

The president, however, expressed optimism that every challenge would be dealt with by strengthening the institutional capacity and the competency of human resources.

At the same time, the supporting facilities and infrastructure must also be improved.

"I understand that since the establishment of the KPK, its facilities, particularly the building provided by the state, are not a true representation of its image," President Widodo noted.

He hoped the new building and its facilities would help strengthen the performance of the commission.
