REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla has called on the people of Indonesia to help maintain security from the threat of terror acts during the Prophet Muhammad's birthday, Christmas and New Year celebrations.

"We have to guard each other because security should be maintained not by the police only, but also by the people and societal organizations," the Vice President said on the sidelines of a celebration held to observe the birth of the Prophet Muhammad at the Istiqlal Mosque on Thursday.

Kalla said threats existed all over the world, and not only in Indonesia. Therefore, all of us should guard each other so that security threats do not materialize.

Earlier, National Police Chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti had announced an alert for possible terror acts taking place in the country. Terror acts that took place abroad can spill over to Indonesia during the celebrations of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday, Christmas and New Year 2016.

"The shooting attacks on civilians in Paris, the suicide bombing in Bangkok and ISIS threats have had an impact on security in the country," he said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The police general also expressed hope that the armed radical group's terror acts would do not happen in Indonesia as they could destroy national stability.

Badrodin also mentioned a number of incidents in Indonesia in 2015, such as the explosive blast at the Aloam Sutra Mall, Tangerang, Banten, and the social conflict in Aceh and Papua and the electric train-metromini bus collision.
