Indonesia supports East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian government confirmed strong support to Palestine by recognizing East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

"Indonesia's position regarding the status of East Jerusalem is already firm and will not change, East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine," said Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno LP Marsudi, at the opening of International Conference on Jerusalem, at Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta, Monday (14/12) ,

She stated that East Jerusalem was not only important for Palestine and Israel, but for also Muslims, Christians and Jews. It was because the three different religions are equally considered Jerusalem as a holy city.

She added that issue of status of Jerusalem became one of the six core issues in Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In addition, there were also issue of Palestinian refugees, Jewish settlements, borders, security and water.

Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) in a message read by UN Resident Coordinator Douglas Broderick expressed the importance of efforts to eliminate the challenges of peace through revitalization of peace process.

"The construction of settlements by Israel is illegal and in violation of international law," she said.
