REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, VIENNA -- World Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has been re-activated the Indonesian membership in 168th OPEC session in Vienna, Austria, Friday (4/12) local time. The OPEC session has also been approved and appointed Widhyawan Prawiraatmadja as OPEC governor of Indonesia.

Widhyawan appointment was proposal of Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Sudirman Said, as Chairman of Indonesian delegation at 168th OPEC session. Widhyawan would serve as OPEC governor of Indonesia for two years.

According to Widhyawan, Indonesia is a country with a high energy growth. Indonesia reactivation membership in OPEC became one of the steps to ensure energy sufficiency.

"Energy sufficiency also becomes part of energy security, which must be followed by development of new renewable energy," said Widhyawan, in an official statement received by Republika, on Friday (4/12).

OPEC has a significant role in pushing movement of world oil prices to a new balance point. This condition was considered to be beneficial for the world economy.

Indonesia, as a producer and importer of oil (both crude and products), was considered to have a unique role in the decision making process in OPEC. However, Indonesia's involvement in the decision-making process and policy of OPEC was expected to safe national interests.
