Indonesian, Chinese Attorney Generals hold bilateral talks

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Attorney General HM Prasetyo held a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart Cao Jianming on the sidelines of the 9th China-ASEAN Attorney Generals' Conference in Nanning, Guangxi, China.

The Conference, that began from November 24 will last till November 26.

The meeting discussed ways to enhance legal cooperation between the two countries, particularly in handling cases of corruption and narcotic smuggling, the Legal Information Center of the Attorney General's Office said in a press statement released on Wednesday.

Both sides agreed that corruption and drug abuse posed a serious threat to mankind and that effective and efficient cooperation is needed to fight these, he said.

The two attorney generals also shared experiences in setting up an anti-corruption task force and strongly committed themselves to uphold the law in addressing trans-boundary corruption cases.

HM Prasetyo stated that Indonesia has had some bad experience as a result of these two kinds of crimes.

Therefore, he added, the meeting served not only as a forum to exchange experiences and information but also as a means to enhance cooperation in law enforcement as a follow up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two nations in 2014.

At the meeting, Prasetyo was accompanied by Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes Arminsyah, Chief of Law and Foreign Relations Bureau Jan Maringka and Chief of Asset Recovery Center Loeke Larasati.

The 9th ASEAN-China Attorney Generals Conference is aimed at increasing the role of the public prosecutor's offices in fighting transnational crimes, protecting social welfare and maintaining regional stability.
