REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUALA LUMPUR -- Indonesia and Malaysia signed a charter of formation of Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) in Kuala Lumpur, Saturday (21/11). The agreement was signed by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Resources, Rizal Ramli, with Malaysian Plantations and Commodities Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. It was also witnessed by President Joko Widodo and Malaysian Prime Minister, Najib Razak.
CPOPC aimed to promote, establish and strengthen cooperation in palm oil industry among the member of CPOPC. It was also to ensure the industry's contribution to economic development and prosperity of the people
The Council would promote development of palm oil industry among palm oil producer countries. It would also encourage prosperity of farmers and establish a global framework for sustainable palm oil.
CPOPC also promoted cooperation and investment to build palm oil industry areas that are sustainable and environmentally friendly, to overcoming obstacles in palm oil trade. In addition to Indonesia and Malaysia as founders, CPOPC was also opened to all palm oil producing countries, including Brazil, Colombia, Thailand, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Uganda.
For the initial operation of CPOPC, Indonesia and Malaysia each contributed 5 million US dollars as initial funding. CPOPC secretariat would be located in Jakarta.
The two ministers also proposed Global Framework Principles of Sustainable Palm Oil or e+POP. E+POP program has nine principles which would strengthen image and promote positive side of palm oil.
