REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- South Sumatra Provincial Government closed opportunities to tobacco industry to become sponsor of XVIII Asian Games 2018 that would be held in Palembang and Jakarta.

"In order to support tobacco free road to Asian Games 2018, the event will be free from contribution of tobacco industry," said Head of Health Department of South Sumatra, Lesty Nuraini, on Tuesday (17/11).

Lesty explained, exercise and smoking are two opposite activities. South Sumatra Provincial Government did not want to use sport's image for promotion of cigarettes that was actually just a tool for the industry to cover the dangers of tobacco consumption.

"Sport is health and cigarette is detrimental to health," she said.

Meanwhile, according to Assistant II Regional Secretary of South Sumatra, Ahmad Najib, Jakabaring Sport City (JSC) would be a non-smoking area or free tobacco. JSC as a non-smoking area had previously been applied during the XXVI SEA Games in 2011.

"JSC is a sports area that we choose, so that all athletes can implement a healthy lifestyle, without cigarettes," he said.
