Sukarno, without Hatta, Street launched in Bandung

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG - East Cikapundung Street had been officially renamed to Dr. Ir. Sukarno Street in National Heroes' Day, 10th November 2015. Son of the First President of Indonesia Sukarno, Muhammad Guruh Irianto Sukarnoputra, appreciated it as an award given by the citizens and the Government of Bandung.

"Usually the name of Mr. Sukarno with Mr. Hatta, Soekarno-Hatta. This is the first time," said Guruh, in the launch of Dr. Ir. Sukarno Street, Tuesday (10/11).

Guruh expressed gratitude to Bandung, because it was for the first time the name of Sukarno was immortalized as the name of the street without juxtaposed with the name of former Vice President Mohammad Hatta. He said, name of Soekarno-Hatta already seemed to have become duumvirate, from the New Order era.

"We are happy to have received the award from citizens of Bandung, West Java," Guruh added.

Mayor of Bandung, Ridwan Kamil, said the launch of Dr. Ir. Sukarno Street was a form of honor to the first president of Indonesia. In addition, Ridwan also said the street was considered as a form of respect to the traces of birth of Indonesia that its formulation was done in Bandung.

Ridwan said there were three privileges that East Cikapundung Street was chosen to be renamed to Dr. Ir. Sukarno Street. One of the privileges, East Cikapundung Street was geared towards Asia Afrika Street which was the first street in Java.

Other privileges, Ridwan continued, East Cikapundung Street was also extended alongside the Merdeka building that holds the history of the Asian-African Conference of decades ago. Moreover, East Cikapundung Street was traversed by a river that became "a mother" for the citizens of West Java, namely Cikapundung river.
