REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's economy grew by 4.73 percent in the third quarter of this year, up slightly from 4.72 percent in the first quarter and 4.67 percent in the second quarter, stated the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).

The third-quarter growth brought the economic growth in the year ending September 30, 2015, to 4.71 percent, higher than the first-semester growth of 4.69 percent, BPS Deputy Head for Balance Sheet and Statistical Analysis Suhariyanto noted here on Thursday.

Suhariyanto remarked that the information and communication sector recorded the highest growth of 10.83 percent in the third quarter, followed by the financial sector at 10.35 percent, and the educational service sector at 8.25 percent.

"The growth was fueled by almost all business fields, except the mining and quarrying sector, which contracted 5.64 percent due to a shortfall in global commodity prices," he pointed out.

In terms of the sources of economic growth, the manufacturing industry led the third-quarter growth with 0.92 percent, followed by the construction sector at 0.65 percent, the information and communication sector at 0.48 percent, and the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sector at 0.46 percent.

He noted that government consumption was the highest contributor at 6.56 percent to the gross domestic product (GDP), followed by non-profit institutions' consumption at 6.39 percent, household consumption at 4.96 percent, and gross fixed capital formation at 4.62 percent.

"The other component saw a negative growth, with exports contracting 0.69 percent and imports declining 6.11 percent chiefly due to declining export and import performances," he revealed.

Spatially, the Indonesian economy in the third quarter was still dominated by Java, which contributed 58.27 percent to the GDP, followed by Sumatra with 22.37 percent, Kalimantan 7.99 percent, Sulawesi 6.08 percent, and other islands 5.29 percent.

"Among the other islands, Bali and Nusa Tenggara recorded the highest growth of 11.75 percent compared to the same period last year, while Kalimantan saw a negative growth of 0.41 percent due to declining performance of the mining industry," he added.
