REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would hold a symposium on disaster mitigation and development of national security in Indonesia. The symposium would be held at Hotel Mulia, Jakarta on 24th November 2015.

The implementation of symposium refered to the condition of Indonesia and Japan which were prone to be attacked by disaster. So that the development of disaster mitigation system was necessary in order to avoid casualties and damages.

"Disaster mitigation system is determined by many factors, such as technology, investments in prevention system, politics, and policy to develop cooperation in fundamental fields," said Counsellor of Japanese Embassy in Indonesia, Takuro Tasaka, Monday (3/11).

Japan and Indonesia have 40 years cooperation, including disaster mitigation cooperation. One of them was the construction of SABO dam which serves to hold the sediment when volcanoes erupt.

Until now, there were at least 250 SABO dams along the river from Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta. The amount was mostly built by Japan through its cooperation with Indonesia.

According to Tasaka, the implementation of disaster mitigation system in Indonesia greatly helped the development of the system in Japan.

"Because of types of disasters in Japan similar with Indonesia, so the development here can also be applied and useful there," he added.

Symposium in Hotel Mulia would be attended by about 1,000 people involved in disaster mitigation. It included members of Japanese parliament, governors and representatives of ASEAN countries.
