4.409 Aceh Singkil residents flee from Aceh

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- North Sumatra Regional Police stated that there were 4,409 residents from Aceh Singkil who fled south to North Sumatra to avoid conflict.

Head of Public Relations of North Sumatra Police, Commissioner Pol Helfi Assegaf, in Medan, Wednesday (14/10), said the residents of Aceh Singkil were evacuated to two districts in North Sumatra, namely Central Tapanuli (3,433 people) and West Pakpak (976 people).

In Central Tapanuli, Aceh Singkil residents were accommodated in five locations in Manduamas District, such as KHI Church, Village Hall of Saragih, SMP 1 Atap Saragih, Saragih HKBP Church, and Catholic Parish Tumba Jahe.

Although the number of refugees in Central Tapanuli were 3,433 people, but the police was still collecting data to determine the number of adults and children refugee.

Local government had done handling steps such as the provision of rice, instant noodles, eggs, cooking oil, mineral water, fish, tents, kitchen equipment, and a variety of other needs.

To prevent things that are not desirable, 34 personnel of Brimob Unit Detachment C, 28 personnels of Korem 023/Kawal Samudera, and 40 personnel of Kodim 0211/Central Tapanuli has already been placed in order to keep the border of North Sumatra and Aceh Singkil.

"25 police personnel were also stand by in Manduamas," he added.

Meanwhile, refugees in West Pakpak were placed in Sibagindar district office, school, houses, and tents that have been prepared. West Pakpak District Government also prepared a variety of logistics for refugees from Aceh Singkil.

"The vehicles that will enter the territory of Aceh Singkil also be examined at the border by the military and police officers," said Helfi.

Based on the information from the refugees in Central Tapanuli, the residents of Aceh Singkil was displaced, because there are groups of people wanted to chase them.

"Frightened, they ran in different directions, to Central Tapanuli and West Pakpak," Helfi explained.
