REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW YORK -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Tuesday reiterated his call on Libyan parties to conclude political dialogue and sign an agreement that will lead to the formation of a government of national accord.

"Only a Government of National Accord will unite the Libyans and enable them, with the support of the international community, to address these challenges," said a statement released by Ban's spokesperson.

Libya has been witnessing a frayed political process after the 2011 turmoil which toppled its leader Muammar Gaddafi. The country is now juggling two rival parliaments and governments.

Libya's internationally recognized parliament House of Representatives (HOR) on Monday decided to extend its mandate beyond its expiry date on Oct. 20.

A parliament spokesman said that lawmakers had amended the constitutional declaration and that the HOR will hand over power after a new body is elected.

The UN has brokered several rounds of dialogues between the conflicting parties since last September, but clashes persisted despite a truce agreed by the warring factions.

"The Secretary-General remains committed to supporting the Libyan people through his Special Representative and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya," said the statement.
