REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW YORK -- Extremism emerges in failed countries due to outside interference from other countries, according to the Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
"In general, a failed state is due to outside interference," Kalla noted after delivering a speech at the Leaders' Summit on Countering ISIL and Violent Extremism at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.
The Indonesian vice president further opined that extremism does not surface due to ideologies; but if we revisit the history of extremism, it occurred in countries that failed, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and others.
"All countries in the world must stand united to overcome extremism," he emphasized.
Kalla admitted that the extremist movement has also sprung up in Indonesia, though lesser in number as compared to other countries, especially in the Middle East, due to the practice of moderate Islam in Indonesia.
