Extremism comes from failed countries, Vice President says

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW YORK -- Vice President, M Jusuf Kalla, said extremism emerged in countries that failed due to the intervention of other countries. To overcome the emerge of extremism, he added, all countries must be united.

"Generally, a state was failed due to outside interference. So other countries should not give intervention, either for reasons of democracy, human rights or whatever," said the Vice President during his speech at the "Leader's Summit on countering Isil and Violent Extremism" at headquarters of the UN, New York, US, Tuesday (29/9).

Further, Kalla stated extremism arises not because of ideology. The history of the emerge of extremism showed that it occurred in countries that failed, such as in Afghanistan, Iraq and others.

"To overcome it, all nations of the world must be united," he added.

Kalla admitted that there was also a movement of extremism in Indonesia, but it was less, compared with other countries, particularly in the Middle East. He said, a country should not enforce democracy by violating the democracy itself, because it will cause a new authoritarian.
