REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MECCA -- The number of Indonesian hajj pilgrims confirmed dead after the September 24 stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia, increased to 34 on Sunday afternoon from 19 early Sunday.

"The number of dead pilgrims has increased to 34. Fifteen more hajj pilgrims have been confirmed dead," Head of the Mecca working area of the Indonesian Hajj Pilgrims (PPIH) Arsyad Hidayat said here.

Nine of the 15 dead pilgrims came from flight batch 61 of the Jakarta-Bekasi embarkation point. They have been identified as Tanti Puspitawati Suharsono, Rina Ocktarina Siroz Thoyib, Neneng Nurjuwitawati Deni Sahroni, Erik Suryaman Aceng Kartika, Eni Sukarni Oyo, Atik Suryati Suarno, Endang Sutiani Atang, Debi Merliandayani Hamdani, and Wisma Widyana Puspitasari.

The other dead pilgrims have been identified as Nabana Matsen Tarif, Reni Arfiani Kaherdin and Ponpon Sadjaah Sastrapradja from flight batch 14 of Batam embarkation point, Tasmudji Agung Seputro and Muzayyana Tahir Saruni from flight batch 48 of Surabaya embarkation point and Nadjemiah Samad Madjida from flight batch 10 of Makassar embarkation point.

In identifying the dead pilgrims, the Saudi organizing committee of hajj pilgrimage involved an identification team from the Directorate General of the Hajj and Minor Hajj Organization at the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs, the hajj pilgrim protection team of the Indonesian military and police and the Indonesian representative in Jedda.

"The condition of dead pilgrims until the fourth day (after the incident) has changed. Their faces looked blackish blue and larger but they still could be identified," Arsyad said.

A total of 112 Indonesia pilgrims are reported missing from their camps after the incident.
