REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG -- Mayor of Padang city, West Sumatra province, Mahyeldi Ansharullah said Padang's cooperation with Perth (Australia) and Dubai (the United Arab Emirates) will be beneficial to all sides.
"The Padang city's move to have cooperation with Perth and Dubai has a huge potential, especially in business and trade," the mayor said here on Tuesday.
He said one of the opportunities that such cooperation provides is in the airline industry.
Ansharullah said since Perth and Dubai are connected by three flights, this route can be an opportunity for Padang to become a transit point.
"If we take this opportunity, it can strengthen cooperation among Perth, Padang, and Dubai," he said.
In addition to flights, agriculture and business are also areas which can be potentially developed as part of the cooperation between Padang and Perth.
Perth has cattle farms from where meat is exported to a number of countries, including Dubai. "Before the meat is exported to Dubai, the cows can be butchered in Padang, and the meat could then be shipped to Dubai," he explained.
Earlier, an Australian senator from Perth, Alan Eggleston, had said the Indonesian teachers can teach in Australia because Australians have an immense interest in learning the Indonesian language.
"We do need teachers to teach the Indonesian language in Australia," he said.
Eggleston said currently, there are only two languages being taught in Australia, English and Indonesian.
"Indonesian is a foreign language that Australians must learn because it is the second language after English," he said.
