REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Head of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG), Andi Eka Sakya, said that Indonesia is not one of the biggest emitter in the world.

“That’s not true,” Andi said, after the opening of the International Workshop On Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) in Jakarta, Tuesday (18/8).

Andi explained that largest emitters in the world are industrialized countries, such as USA, China, and India. The rate of the emissions in Indonesia is only 0,174 ppm per month. This rate is not as high as the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2).

The results of measurements of the greenhouse gases in the GAW station, Bukit Koto tabang, West Sumatra, during the last 12 years since 2004 showed an upward trend of CO2 linearly, from 372 ppm to 397 ppm.

Globally, agreement of emission value is 450 ppm. The Government has committed to the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 26 percent through its own efforts or 41 percent through international support until 2020.

The World Resources Institute (WRI) report in Washington DC stated that China is the biggest emitters in the world with more than 10.26 billion tons, followed by USA with 6.2 billion tons. Indonesia became the sixth largest emitters with 2.05 billion tons.
