Javanese Rhinoceros Cula Sellers Arrested

One of the suspects claimed to have killed six Javanese rhinos since 2020.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANTEN -- Banten police arrested perpetrators involved in a case of poaching of javan rhinoceros in Ujung Kulon National Park Area (TNUK), Sumur District, Pandeglang Regency, Banten. Wadir Reskrimum of Banten Police, AKBP Dian Setyawan, in Serang, Banten, on Friday, said the two arrested perpetrators were YP (41) from Matraman, East Jakarta and WY (71) from Kenjeran, Surabaya City, East Java Province.

“For YP's role in this case as a seller of rhino horn from the hunting proceeds of the perpetrator with the initials N. whereas WY is the buyer,” he said during a press conference in Mapolda, Banten, Friday (26/4/2024).

The perpetrator of YP was successfully arrested on Sunday (17/3/2024) in his village in Matraman area, Jakarta, while WY was arrested on Tuesday (23/4/2024) at Ruko Permata Ancol, North Jakarta. The arrest of YP and WY is the result of the development of the perpetrators of N (31) residents of Rancapinang Village, Cimanggu District, Pandeglang Regency who were successfully arrested on Sunday, (26/11/2023).

“It is the result of the development of Banten police investigators. Currently, the case against N has been transferred to Kejati Banten and is pending trial in Pandeglang District Court,” he said.

The case was successfully solved based on a report from officers of Ujung Kulon National Park Area (TNUK) Pandeglang. Made a police report because the hunters were recorded on trap cameras in TNUK Area.

“A group of people carrying firearms, suspected of hunting protected animals, namely the Javan rhino, has been identified. Because it was recorded on camera,” he said.

From the identification process, the officers managed to find out the identity of the hunter, namely N, and the hunt for the javan rhino was carried out with five other colleagues. “At the moment, five of his colleagues are in police searches and have been designated as DPOs or are on the police search list,” he said.

From the description N they have been hunting Javanese rhinos since 2020 and during the operation there have been six rhinos killed. “Culanya is sold at a price of Rp 200 million to Rp 300 million. From the sale, YP only got a profit of Rp 5 million, the rest was deposited to N,” he said.

The two actors, YP and WY, are ensnared in article 40 paragraph 2 and article 21 paragraph 2 of law number 5 of 1990 on Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems.
