REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KENDARI -- Regretful of what he saw of today's picture of the nation a veteran blamed rampant corruption keeping the country weak.
"In our time at the early years of the country's independence, members of the House of Representatives (DPR and DPRD) were very loyal to their commitments to fight for the interest of the people," Amran Syahban, chairman of the Southeast Sulawesi chapter of the Indonesian Legion of Veterans (LVRI), said.
Now after 70 years, the spirit has lost among the House members,Amran said here on Sunday commenting on the commemoration of the country's 70th independence day.
"The bunch of members of DPR/DPRD who claimed to be representatives of the people think more of their personal interest rather than the people," he said.
It is obvious from the many members of legislative assembly involved in cases of corruption, he said.
The lawmakers had fought for a seat at the parliament not because of love for the country or the people, he said.
"They think only what they could grab and steal from the state utilizing their power.
"The honorable members of the legislative body have no more shame to commit the most contemptible thing," he said.
