REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN -- Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) North Sumatra expected people to be aware of the illegal meat from abroad. The practice of smuggling was allegedly occurred in Medan.
"The contraband meat needs to be closely monitored by quarantine officers and is likely to contain animal diseases that could endanger public health," said Chairman of YLKI North Sumatra, Abubakar Siddik, in Medan, Sunday (9/8).
Earlier, the Economic Unit Officer Criminal Police of Belawan seized 20 tons of illegal meat from abroad. The meat were carried by Motor Vessel (KM) Rahawani GT 9 Gastric Number 2539/ppb. The boats was found to be stranded in the Kera River, Pamatang Johar, Labuhan Deli, Wednesday (5/8) at around 13:00 pm.
The meat was suspected to be smuggled into Tanjung Balai Asahan, North Sumatra. Abubakar warned the public to be careful in buying meat and not to buy meat that was illegally imported from foreign countries.
In addition, public also have to carefully buy meat and to ensure that the meat purchased was actually lawful in accordance with Islam. "People do not buy meat randomly, which can be very dangerous, and can cause disease," he said.
