Indonesia has potential to build solar powered boats

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's tropical climate has plenty of sunshine every day. It can can be used as source of energy for boats.

"Indonesia has environmentally friendly resources. Perhaps we can make a boat using solar power," said Swiss researcher shipping architecture, Jeremie Lagarrigue, during a visit to the University of Indonesia in Depok, Thursday (6/8).

Lagarrigue, who is also the Chairman of shipbuilding company in Switzerland, Hydros Innovation SA, said the abundance of sunshine in Indonesia could be a source of energy for boats. "Indonesia has a lot of sunshine, while in Switzerland, sunshine only comes in five months," he said.

In his country, almost every house has solar panels to accommodate environmentally friendly energy sources. Meanwhile, he regretted the use of fossil-based energy sources in Indonesia, while the solar energy is more potential.

Meanwhile, a lecturer from Shipping Engineering Program University of Indonesia, Sunaryo, explained that there will be collaboration between the University of Indonesia and Hydros research centers. The cooperation is aimed at transferring technology from the company.

"They would help us in transferring of technology. It because Switzerland is excellent in technology and wants to help Indonesia," said Sunaryo.

Sunaryo said that collaboration with Jeremie Lagarrigue aims to develop the maritime sector of Indonesia. Technology and knowledge from Switzerland will be applied in Indonesia.
