This event was organized to formulate reasons why tempe has to be proposed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (ICHH). It was also to obtain data and information on the history and culture of tempe, and formulate a strategy to get a common understanding with the government.
The chairman of Pergizi Pangan of Indonesia, Hardiansyah, said that UNESCO has given recognition to Kimchi from Korea and Batik from Indonesian as ICHH, while for foods, Indonesia has not yet.
"Tempe is not only food, but also has cultural values, history, and economy of the Indonesia. Because of its uniqueness, tempe deserves to be a part of Indonesian culture," he explained.
According to him, tempe has a great potential to be ICHH through the efforts of the Government. In this case, it should be from Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud).
