REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan said he would improve the performance and facility of the land transportation system.
"I will sit together with Organda (land transportation organization), Gaikindo (Indonesian Motor vehicle Industry Association), police and all stakeholders such as district heads, mayors, to discuss bus transportation facility," the minister said here on Tuesday.
The said that the meeting aimed to improve bus transportation system so that it could be enjoyed by the public. It is also aimed to ensure passenger safety while encouraging economic growth next year.
"We will ask them all to help increase the services of bus transportation," he said.
Jonan expressed regret over the fact that now many people opted to use private vehicles during holidays like during the Eid or on regular days.
Moreover, he said, the risks of using private vehicles are greater than using public transportation.
"The number of passengers, particularly bus passengers declined by 10 percent. This is not only a concern but also a fact that bus transportation begins to be left," he said.
He said that in the current stagnancy of economic growth, the people actually still could afford public transportation. After all, the number of people using airplanes during the Eid or Lebaran was still high.
"The domestic flight passengers grew by eight percent during the Lebaran exodus. This indicated that amid the economic slowdown, the people's purchasing power was still extraordinary," the minister added.
