British PM chooses Indonesia on his first stop in Asia tour

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- British Prime Minister David Cameron will visit Indonesia on Monday, July 27, in his first tour outside Europe after being re-elected. He is scheduled to meet with his Indonesian counterpart President Joko Widodo to talk on bilateral cooperation. Cameron also plans to hold business meeting and interfaith dialogue.

British Ambassador to Indonesia Moazzam Malik said that Indonesia was chosen as the first country that Cameron would visit because UK believe that Indonesia was the key partner for the future. "We believe Indonesia is one of those country alongside China that will shape Asia and world economy for the 21st century. Our objective is to build close relations with Indonesia," Malik said in press briefing on Sunday, July 26.

During his visit, Cameron will be accompanied by ministerial and business delegation, namely British Cabinet Minister in Charge of Energy and Climate Changing Issues Amber Rudd and UK Trade Envoy to Indonesia Richard Graham.

In his first day, Cameron will meet the president and government for bilateral discussion. Then, he will visit ASEAN Secretary General which is located in Jakarta.

He is also scheduled to meet business people and Asia Business Council. On that event, Cameron will be accompanied by 30 business leaders from the UK. They are ACE Winches, Airbus Group UK, Arup, AT Engine Controls, Atkins, Aviva, Bango, Benoy, Blockchain, Concrete Canvas, Darktrace, EarthPort, FreshMinds, Heraeus Noblelight, Iwoca, JCB, Jardines, Laing O'Rourke, Lloyd's of London, Oxford Products, Pennies, Qubit, RateSetter, RepKnight, Rolls-Royce, Surrey Satellite Technology, The Floow, UK Higher Education International Unit, Weir Group, and Wessington Cryogenics.

Also, Cameron will have separate event on infrastructure which aims to deepen cooperation between Indonesia and the UK. "President has very ambitious plan to develop infrastructure. UK has greatest talent in design and engineer and great talent in infrastructure," Malik said.

UK will also offer cooperation on space. Malik said Indonesia would need satellite technology so that the country could monitor its waters, prevent deforestation and manage climatic risk.

Besides discussing on economics, Cameron will meet senior religious leaders to talk on managing extremism and maintaining tolerance.
