REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JEMBER -- People in Jember, East Java, were shocked by magnitude 6.3 quake which occurred in Malang at 02.05 p.m. West Indonesia Time on Sunday.

"We felt the tremor which was very strong shaking tables and items on them," Budi, a villager of Cakru hamlet in Kencong sub-district said.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency the epicenter of the quake was 150 kilometer southwest of Malang district, 9.57 South Latitude and 112.64 East Longitude.

The quake was located 10 kilometer deep and did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

The epicenter of the quake was also recorded at 163 kilometer southeast of Blitar, 168 kilometer southwest of Lumajang, 253 kilometer southwest of Surabaya, the capital of East Java, and 748 kilometer southeast of Jakarta.

Budi said he felt tremor twice but the first one was not quite strong unlike the second one.

"The quake that occurred at 14.10 West Indonesia Time was quite strong shaking things," he said.

The magnitude 6.3 quake was felt quite strong on the southern coast of Jember district such as in Puger, Gumukmas and Kencong areas while in several sub-districts in the city area it was not felt quite strong.

"When I felt the quake I immediately ran out of he house and several neighbors shouted to inform about the quake. It lasted only about a minute and no damage was found," Agung, a villeger at Sumbersari, said.

The head of emergency and logistics of the regional disaster mitigation agency, Heru Widagdo, said some people in Jember felt the quake in Malang but "so far there has been no report about damage caused by the quake."
