REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DAMASCUS -- The Islamic State (IS/ISIS) militants carried out three explosions against positions of the Kurdish fighters in northern Syria Saturday, a monitor group reported.

Two blasts targeted the Kurdish positions in the border city of Tal Abyad in the countryside of the northern city of Raqqa, the de facto capital of the IS, and the town of Sirin in the countryside of Aleppo city, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The UK-based watchdog group said information about causalities are still forthcoming.

The IS has been engaged in intense battles with the Kurdish fighters of the People's Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria, following the progress made by the Kurds against the IS group.

The YPG captured Tal Abyad on the Syrian-Turkish borders from the hands of the IS, leaving only one conduit for the IS into Turkey in the town of Rai in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

On Thursday, Turkish fighters engaged in a firefight with the IS near the Rai town, in what appeared later to be a Turkish decision to enter the battles against the IS.

Syrian officials and opposition activists have long accused Turkey of backing the radical groups, and allowing tens of thousands of jihadi fighters to enter Syria.
