Home Affairs Minister asks local police to investigate Tolikara incident

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo asked Papua Regional Police (Polda) to investigate provocateur acts of violence against Muslims in Tolikara Papua on Eid al- Fitr on July, 17. Tjahjo admitted he had heard the full report from the head of security and governance in Papua.

"I, as Home Affairs Minister, asked the Papua Police to investigate who the provocateurs of burning and vandalism as well as the attack to mosque in Tolikara," said Tjahjo in a short message received by ROL on Monday night, July 20.

Tjaho stated, Tolikara case must be resolved legally. It was because Indonesia was a country based on law. He was optimistic that the police were able to investigate the Tolikara case.

"Police certainly thoroughly investigate the problem. We have to be sure that Indonesian is state of law," he said.

Tjahjo said he had held a joint meeting together with Trikora Military Commander, Deputy Police Chief, the head of regional BIN, and the Provincial Government of Papua-related violent incidents in Tolikara. Meetings conducted on Monday evening, July 20, local time.

Tjahjo will visit the stall and mosque which were burned, as well as victims of violence in Tolikara.

He also will hear reports from Tolikara Regents and input from religious and community leaders. Tjahjo supports voluntary work with the community, military, police, and local government to rebuild the mosque and burned stalls.

"Tomorrow (today) I will look at the people's condition and their injuries as well as damage to the stalls and mosque in Tolikara," said Tjahjo.

Reflecting on the Tolikara case, the PDIP politician was hoping the public can be mutually tolerant and respect the right of every person to worship. Because Indonesia is a diverse country that consists of diverse religions and faiths.

"I personally help to rebuild the burned mosque in Tolikara and submit 50 pieces of the book of the Quran," he said.
