REPUBLIKA.CO, JAKARTA -- A total of 440 people have died in various traffic accidents across the country in the past few days during the Eid holidays, according to the police.

"During the Ketupat Operation until two days after Eid, the number of road traffic deaths has reached 440," National Police Command's Head of Public Information Bureau, Brigadier General Agus Rianto, stated here on Monday.

A total of 2,148 traffic accidents were recorded since the start of the Ketupat Operation on July 9 until two days after Eid, leaving 440 people dead, 766 seriously injured, and 2,774 lightly wounded.

Two days after Eid, which fell on Friday, a total of 197 traffic accidents occurred across the country, claiming 48 lives, seriously wounding 68, and inflicting minor injuries to 285 others.

On the second day of Eid, the number of victims with serious and minor injuries was down as compared to the same period last year.

"The number of traffic accidents on the second day was 15 percent lower as compared to the same period last year while the number of seriously wounded was down 30 percent, and the number of people with minor injuries decreased by 11 percent," he revealed.

To ensure security and the smooth flow of holiday traffic, the police have deployed 82,539 personnel for the Ketupat Operation that will last until July 25.

Meanwhile, the military (TNI) has deployed 12,761 personnel and other concerned agencies have assigned 50,377 personnel, and hence, 145,676 personnel are involved in the Ketupat Operation.

They have been stationed at 3,030 security posts and 1,083 service posts along Eid holiday routes across the country.
