REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) needs to follow former president Soeharto in placing trusted personnel in his cabinet, Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR) Fahri Hamzah said.

"President Joko Widodo, like Soeharto, must recruit trusted personnel who have extraordinary capability," the House Deputy Speaker said here on Wednesday.

Fahri Hamzah made the statement in response to public discourses regarding the cabinet reshuffle issue.

According to Hamzah, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) must fully trust whatever his aides will do.

"Soeharto was able to remain in power for 32 years because he recruited trusted persons and fully backed what his aides were willing to do," the legislator stressed.

While selecting highly competent people, Jokowi should also trust them to do what they have to do. "In the past, when a minister had a program, all ministers in the cabinet, including Soeharto, supported the program," he said.

Hamzah cited as an example the competence of former foreign minister Ali Alatas and former minister/state secretary Moerdiono.

"All programs were in their hands. There should be no single mistake. All things that would be done by Soeharto had been prepared with a well checking system," he said.

Hamzah said that Jokowi's aides should have the competence that is equal to that of Moerdiono. "Other people might make a mistake but the President must not," he stressed.
