REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BIAK -- The Biak Munara Wampasi Festival (BMW) helps to promote Biak as a traditional tourism destination that highlights the local wisdom and culture, according to Deputy Tourism Minister for Tourism Marketing and Development Esthy Reko Astuti.

"The Ministry of Tourism supports the BMW Festival by organizing a traditional fishing catching fiesta during the low tide, locally known as Snap Mor," Astuti stated while opening the BMW Festival at Mnurwar Beach located in Oridek sub-district, Biak District, Papua Province, on Wednesday.

She said that besides its authentic indigenous culture, Biak Numfor also has World War II relics that can make it an interesting tourist destination.

Astuti hoped that the BMW Festival would be scheduled as part of the national tourism calendar.

"The BMW Festival is expected to attract foreign and domestic tourists to visit Biak," she noted.

Head of Administration of Biak Numfor Thomas A.E. Ondy remarked that the administration welcomes all critics and any form of feedback on organizing the BMW Festival to improve the program in the future.

"Biak administration and the Tourism Office have made the necessary preparations to the best of their abilities," he affirmed.

The programs scheduled as part of the BMW Festival 2015 are Snap Mor, orchids and handicraft exhibition, Padaido Island and Biak Land tours, underwater photo contest as well as the attractions of walking on hot stone, or locally named Apen Beyeren, among others.
