REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, Medan, N Sumatra, June 30 (Antara) -- Rescuers have discovered and moved five victims of an airplane that crashed in Medan, North Sumatra, on Tuesday to a hospital.
Until 1:50 p.m. local time, hundreds of personnel of rescues teams were seen working hard to extinguish the fire and find victims of the Hercules C-130 plane crash.
It is believed that numerous other victims have yet to be found.
A C-130 transport plane of the Indonesian Air Force crashed in Jamin Ginting Road in Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra province, on Tuesday at 12:10 p.m. local time.
The transport plane with registration number A-1310 crashed shortly after takeoff from Polonia Airbase during its flight from Medan to Natuna Island.
The ill-fated aircraft carried supplies from Halim Perdanakusuma Airbase in Jakarta to several others, such as Pekanbaru, Medan, Tanjung Pinang, Ranai (Natuna Island), and Pontianak.
The exact number of casualties is unknown at present, but the site of the crash is widely known as one of the busiest roads that connects Medan and Brastagi tourist resort.
Spokesman for the North Sumatra Regional Police Command Senior Commissioner Helfi Assegaf said that the plane crashed three minutes after takeoff. It was carrying officers on duty who were to be dropped off at several locations.
He added that the police can neither confirm the cause of the incident nor the number of victims yet, as evacuation procedures were still ongoing.
