VP urges regional heads not to resign

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla assessed the regional heads must carry out their mandate to keep running the office until the term of office ends. It was related to the amount of the resignation submission of the regional heads ahead of simultaneous local elections.

"They must fulfill their mandate, because he asked for the mandate and the people gave mandate for them. Please, do not cut in the middle this mandate," said Kalla at the Vice President's office, Jakarta, on Friday, June 19.

Furthermore, the resignation submission and even then, said Kalla, will not necessarily be approved by the government.

Currently, there were three heads or deputy heads of regions that apply for the retreat. Namely, the Mayor of Pekalongan Bashir Ahmad, Bupati of Ogan Ilir Mawardi Yahya, and Deputy Mayor of Sibolga Marudut Situmorang. Home Affairs Minister was also asked for the reason of the resignation submission.

"But it has not yet, maybe he just wanted to get out rather than follow the rule about the full two terms of office. Perhaps he thought that if he out two months earlier it means he’s not fulfill the term of office, but it was not. The definition of two terms is for more than half a term, it’s equal to one term of office, and the law said so,”said JK.

As is known, a number of heads and deputy heads of regions intended to resign in order to smooth their family intention to participate in the local elections. This step also assessed was done to deal with the legislation.

The law that Article 1 point 6 of Law Number 8 of 2015 concerning Election of governors, regents, and the mayor that mention candidates for the head / deputy head of the region should not have any conflict of interest with the incumbent.

In explanation of the article mentioned, the conflict of interest was mean related by blood, marriage bond and / or lineage one level straight up, down, sideways with the incumbent, i.e. father, mother, in-laws, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, son, daughter, daughter or son in-law. Unless, they have passed the break of one more office term.
