Pempek Palembang can go global

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- Trade Ministry Rachmat Gobel assessed that special food from Palembang, such as 'pempek' and 'kerupuk' could be introduced for global marketing. He also urged local government to develop the archipelago's typical food to target overseas marketing.

"Do not target just locally, but regionally and worldwide export," he said while inaugurating Pasar 10 Ulu, Palembang which currently revitalized, on Sunday, June 14.

The minister added that there were several reasons pempek and kerupuk Palembang fit in the global market. One of them, because the culinary did not have a high calorie, considering the material was made from fish.

"Local governments don't have to be afraid and ashamed to market typical food of Palembang as pempek and kerupuk because it is definitely the sale will be accepted in the global market," he said.

Minister Rachmat came to inaugurate Pasar 10 Ulu accompanied by Chairman of Commission VI of House of Representatives (DPR) A Hafiz Thohir and member of Commission VI Dodi Reza Alex. On there he had enjoyed eating pempek and kerupuk of Palembang that were served. He said pempek Palembang was one of his favorite foods since long time ago.

"I have always like pempek Palembang," said Trade Minister who was also accompanied by Deputy Governor of South Sumatra (Sulsel) Ishak Mekki.
