PBNU proposes National Santri Day on October 22

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Council (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siroj directly propose to the President Joko Widodo that the Islamic students day (National Santri Day) set out every October 22.

The proposal submitted by KH Said while giving a speech at the opening of the National Conference of NU Ulema and Istiqhotsah to welcome the holy month of Ramadan at the Istiqlal Mosque, on Sunday, June 14.

"To Mr. President we directly ask the Islamic students day set on October 22,"said KH Said. The event was also attended by the President Jokowi, Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, and several other ministers of working cabinet, as well as the elders of NU.

On October 22, 1945, he said, was the history for Islamic students and scholars to join to defend freedom. At that time the resistance of students and scholars to the allies led by KH Hasjim Ash'ari, whom was also the founder of NU as well as grandfather of Gus Dur.

According to him, the momentum of the struggle of students and scholars was also a history milestone in the nation struggle to maintain the independence. "The peak was on November 10 we commemorated it as the day of national hero. While October 22 was the first step of struggle which we have to commemorate as the Islamic students day as we discourse today," said KH Said.
