REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla who is also the general chairman of the Indonesia Red Cross (PMI) joined the fun walk held to mark the World Blodd Donor Day that falls on June 14 here on Sunday.

The event, centered at the National Monument Square (Monas) area, was also marked by distribution of tokens of appreciation to donors.

The commemoration of the World Blood Dornor Day this year carried a theme of "Thank You for Saving My Life" to raise awareness of the community of the importance of safe blood supply.

On the occasion the vice president also launched a blood donor village program to socialize blood donation to villages to assure fast fulfillment of blood transfusion when it is needed.

"It is appropriate for us to thank all. Our population is 250 million and every year we need five pouches of blood and therefore PMI and all its workers in Indonesia must work hard to encourage people to donor their blood," he said.

He said today was the day to thank to all community members for having genuinely helped others every time in need to save their lives through their blood donation.

On the occasion Vice President Jusuf Kalla received five units of vehicles for blood donation from mining company PT Freeport which will be distributed to five regions such as Papua, Jakarta, East Java and others.

PT Freeport has also provided assistance to help repair and revitalize existing blood donor equipment.

"Thank you and I hope this will become a good example. We have 110 blood donation cars like this one and we will continue to increase the number," he said.

He said the vehicles are in fact used to serve the people upon the principle of "from people to people" because anyone could suffer from a blood shortage problem.
