Two PNG nationals caught smuggling 2 kilos of Marijuana

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- Two Papua New Guinea (PNG) nationals, who had illegally smuggled two kilograms of marijuana into Papua, were taken into police custody.

Max Dahay and Jefri Arnol Dahay, the PNG nationals entered through Waris, in the district of Keerom, Jayapura resort police spokesman Adjunct Commissioner Mince Mayor informed the newsmen here on Wednesday.

The two were caught at a shipyard at Dock IV in North Jayapura District, Jayapura, he revealed.

The police confiscated marijuana packed in plastic bags of various sizes from them.

The PNG nationals confessed that they had got the illegal narcotic from someone in Vanimo, PNG, and had smuggled it into Jayapura through Waris, which borders PNG.

The dry marijuana came from Wewak and was to be sold to a collector who is still at large, he revealed.

"The police are still investigating the case. Most of the marijuana seized in Jayapura came from PNG," he added.

The two suspects are now being detained by the Jayapura resort police and will be charged with violating Articles 111 and 114 of Law Number 35 of 2009, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in jail.
