REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government should use an inclusive concept that involves the people's contributions to drive economic development in eastern Indonesia, Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Suryo Bambang Sulisto stated.

"Economic development in eastern Indonesia should use an inclusive concept that involves the people's contributions," Sulisto noted here on Monday (25/5).

Sulisto remarked that the concept of an inclusive economy will be easily realized through the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises.

He said that Indonesia's development is divided into western and eastern regions, with potential in the maritime sector.

Contrary to the handling of development in Indonesia's western region, Sulisto remarked that the the eastern Indonesian region should be developed in accordance with its local characteristics and cultures.

"With the concept of an inclusive economy, I think industry and maritime tourism will grow rapidly," he said.

Based on President Joko Widodo's program, he affirmed that the development of the eastern region will be focused on the priority sectors, which are directly related to the needs of the society.

"So, it takes a strong will from several parties, both at the central and local government levels," he noted.

Sulisto stated that various parties, including the local governments, should benefit from the implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

"I hope that the local governments can be more proactive in playing a strategic role," he said.

The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized the "Trade & Investment Forum: East Indonesian Regions" in Jakarta, on Monday.

The event aims to promote the potential of eastern Indonesia and support business cooperation and investment that are open to domestic entrepreneurs and foreign investors.
