REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) expressed hope that Indonesia's medical herbs would become typical national products that could be promoted in the global market and help boost the national industry.

"Medical herbs are our cultural heritage. I think we should be serious in developing our 'jamu' (medical herbs) as a product, which portrays the image that 'jamu is Indonesia and Indonesia is jamu'," Jokowi stated while opening the Seventh National Meeting of jamu producers at the State Palace here on Monday (25/5).

The president noted that Indonesia's medical herb exports were still constrained by the stringent protection system on food and beverages abroad.

"However, if they are in the form of therapeutic products, medical herbs could still be exported easily," Jokowi, who claimed to have routinely consumed ginger and buffoonery medical herbs in the past 17 years, asserted.

He said that with regard to medical herbs, the government was also obligated to provide guidance, supervision, and protection in a bid to improve the country's herbal medicine industry.
