REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, HO CHI MINH CITY -- Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City is installing more surveillance cameras in areas teeming with prostitution dens, to discourage potential sex buyers and fight other social evils, local online newspaper VnExpress reported Tuesday.

In Ward No. 12, Go Vap District, many cameras have already been set up along some streets, including Tan Son and Phan Huy Ich, and in front of cafes or massage parlors which shelter prostitution, said head of the ward's police, lieutenant colonel Le Thanh Hung.

"Seeing surveillance cameras, potential sex buyers dare not come in," Hung said, adding that the cameras have also helped police to prevent and detect many cases of theft and gambling.

The ward started installing surveillance cameras in August 2013. It has so far had 230 cameras installed at 132 boarding-houses, and along 19 alleys and some roads, with total investment of nearly 850 million Vietnamese dong (roughly 39,000 U.S. dollars). All the money came from local people's contribution, Hung said.

The ward's surveillance camera model is being implemented in many other wards and communes in Ho Chi Minh City.
