REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR) Fahri Hamzah urged the government to take real action relating to the issue of asylum seekers to Indonesia. He suggested government to publish a presidential decree about immigrants.
Fahri said DPR urged the Government to take concrete steps and work internationally in dealing with victims of asylum seekers in sight. Furthermore, continued Fahri, DPR requested President to make a temporary regulation for the basic actions of officials in the field.
"Maybe a kind of Presidential Decree concerning the handling of migrants and asylum seekers," in a press release received by Republika Online (ROL), on Sunday, May 17.
He explained that it’s unfortunate if the image of Indonesia today condemned by the world as a result of the attitude of some officials whom refused to accept the migrants or asylum seekers who landed in Indonesian waters.
"I recently watched a quote from Channel CNN that mentioned that there are officials who forbid migrant boat into the dock. There are also officials who said it would accept but will soon be restored. Others even denying them landing in our waters,” said Fahri.
Attitudes and actions of most officials, according to him, could be understood as the absence of a strong legal basis for state officials to take action. Until now, he said, Indonesia does not set at all the provisions for asylum seekers.
"But could it be a reason not to see for real infliction that is felt by other nations? We can see their suffering, whether we as a humane nations can bear to see them suffer?" said politician of Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).
As a great nation civilized, according to Fahri, Indonesia should not be equated with neighboring countries which with domestic reasons were refuse to help fellow human beings. "This is unacceptable."
In recent time, the Indonesian security forces prevent Rohingya refugees into Indonesia. Refugees that entering Indonesian waters are given food and drink, but were not allowed entering Indonesia. So, that they oscillate at sea.
