REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy Interior Minister (Wamendagri) Bima Arya Sugiarto said the government is targeting voter turnout in 2024 elections to reach 80 percent. The turnout was targeted to resemble the presidential election.

“At least the same yes with the presidential election, the general election (2024 election), it's about 80 percent yes. At least that is our target,” Wamendagri said after reviewing polling station (TPS) 006 in SDN Pegangsaan 01 Pagi, Pegangsaan Village, Jakarta, Wednesday (27/11/2024).

However, he said the government was aware there was a possibility that the participation target could not be realised. “It seems that on paper it is a bit difficult because in the past there were many successful teams of candidates (legislative candidates) who both participated in the work. Well, now the range is a bit far from the candidate's partner to the bottom. So, maybe the conditions are different,” he said.

In addition, he said that the target could not be reached because there was a decrease in the number of polling stations in the 2024 election compared to the time of the 2024 election. “So maybe voters' access to each polling place is somewhat different. There are distance constraints and so on,” he explained.

Therefore, he expected the election organizers to have made efforts to pick up the ball while the polling time was still available.

On a different occasion, Member of the General Election Commission (KPU) RI Idham Holik in Jakarta on Saturday (23/11/2024), said his institution is targeting voter turnout in the 2024 election to reach 82 percent. Earlier, Member of KPU RI August Mellaz revealed that as many as 81.78 percent of voters registered on the permanent voter list (DPT) participated in the 2024 presidential election, while as many as 81.42 percent exercised their voting rights in the 2024 legislative election.

Based on the data of KPU RI, a total of 204,807,222 were recorded in the DPT Election 2024 consisting of 102,218,503 men and 102,588,719 women.
