New foreign press policy in Papua likely violates law

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA –- Chairman of Commission I of House of Representative (DPR) Mahfudz Siddiq said that policy of President Joko Widodo about foreign press freedom to do reporting in Papua, potentially violate the law.

The politician from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) said it was against broadcasting law (32/2002) which is regulates the presence of foreign media. He said in Article 30 about the Foreign Broadcasting Services, journalistic activities of foreign journalists must comply with the law regulations.

"So, they cannot freely enter [the region]. The statement of President Jokowi (about foreign press in Papua) has the potential to violate the law (UU)," he said, on Monday, May 11.

Mahfudz added foreign media activity in Papua must pass through licensing. Actually, said Mahfudz, the regulation for foreign press it not just for Papua, because these regulations not to specific region.
