REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Amidst weak economic conditions due to the falling price of commodity and low exports, the Sharia finance industry was asked to contribute more to the sectors that do not depend on commodities.

Minister of Finance Bambang Brodjonegoro said that the national economy was weak due to low commodity prices, especially oil prices which continue to be forced down.

However, the Sharia finance industry could contribute to a sector that is not dependent on commodities so that financing could be used to open a new business model.

''The impact of lower commodity prices has effect everywhere and it does not also have an effect in Indonesia,'' said Bambang in Sharia Finance Economic Research Forum (FREKS) in 2015 at University of Indonesia (UI) recently.

Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) Muliaman Darmansyah Hadah also asked the Sharia finance industry to be responsive.

Currently, the government is boosting the maritime sector. This is an area where Sharia banks could participate. Muliaman understand, the current Sharia banks are still small so that the need of the research has not been fully met. Major banks have their own research institutions because of their large funds. Meanwhile, Sharia banks should be helped by the university.

"We hope that the association could be a community of mutual help, such as data collection, making it lighter for all. Universities can also help. If Sharia bank is left alone, it will not end the problem,'' said Muliaman.

Muliaman assessed that the information is important for the Sharia finance industry so that Sharia banks will not only provide financing consumption.
