REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- Zimbabwe has thrown its weight behind Indonesia's bid for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2019-2020 term, according to the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe extended his support while holding bilateral talks with President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on the sidelines of the Asian-African Summit at the Jakarta Convention Center on Thursday, the ministry said in a press statement released on Friday (25/4).

At the meeting, Jokowi appreciated Mugabe's readiness to co-chair the summit.

Earlier, the foreign ministers of the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for starting a Joint Commission Session between Indonesia and Zimbabwe. The MoU will serve as a basis for the two countries to enhance their cooperation in all fields.

Sweden has also supported Indonesia's nomination for a non-permanent membership of the UNSC. Both Indonesia and Sweden have agreed to support each other's bid for a non-permanent seat in the UNSC.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi met with her Swedish counterpart, Margot Wallstrom, early this week to discuss the matter.

"Indonesia and Sweden will support each other to secure a non-permanent position in the UNSC," she noted.

Sweden and Indonesia are seeking a non-permanent seat in the UNSC for the 2017-2018 term and the 2019-2020 term, respectively.
