REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TERNATE -- The administration of Ternate city, North Maluku province, in association with its tourism office is developing a spice museum in Ford Orange Fortress area that will have historical collections related to spices on display.

"The museum is open for visitors as a number of collections are already on display and it has met all standard requirements," head of the cultural heritage task force of Ternate's tourism office Rinto Taib said here Tuesday (21/4).

According to him, the museum's collections are still limited as they have mostly come from communities.

"We are waiting for the 2016 budget from the administration to improve the museum's performance and capacity," Taib added.

Historical collections acquired from communities include private collections such as statues and Kora Kora boats.

Kora Kora, or Cora Cora, is a traditional boat of the Maluku islands. It is approximately 10 meters long and is very narrow; it was mostly used for trade and war.

Large Kora Kora boats were used as warships in a war against the Dutch on the Banda Islands in the 17th century. Kora Kora is similar to the Chinese dragon boat in shape and requires some 40 paddlers.

Some of the collections have also come from veterans, for instance a sketch that describes the historical stories of fighters.
